MARKELTON HISTORY

Markleton is a small unincorporated community in Somerset County, Pennsylvania, located in the Laurel Highlands region of the state. The town was named after Thomas Markle, who was one of the earliest settlers in the area in the late 1700s. During the 19th and early 20th centuries, Markleton became a bustling center of commerce and transportation, with its own post office, general store, and railroad station. The town also played an important role in the coal mining industry, with several mines operating in the surrounding hills. Today, Markleton is a quiet community with a rich history and natural beauty, surrounded by rolling hills and scenic countryside. It is home to the historic Church on Markleton Hill, which was built in 1889 and has since been restored.
